Holga in Berlin - Brandenburg Gate | A Holga in Paris’s journey to I Witness

When Matt and I travel we come home with thousands of digital images and rolls of film that I’ve run though my Holga.  It’s really impossible to say: “this one is my favorite” when there are many that I connect with but there are those that are special to me. My Holga Brandenburg Gate is one of those photographs. When I look at this image I feel like I’m looking at a proud but wounded creature. Scared over time but still standing and its witnessing rebirth all around it.

I hope that people are enjoying the Holga shots and don’t mind more in the future because I’ve been having a blast digging through my archive, scanning old work and shoot new work.

Tutto Theatre Company is using one of the Holga shots that I shared with you in past, “A Holga in Paris” as artwork for the I Witness poster and handbill.

The original image was just straight B&W then I took it into this split tone place and the final poster was design by Matt Ervin (my loving other half) and all I can say is that I love this poster. Matty makes my work look good.

More to come soon!

Holga & SYTYCD

If you follow my work at all on Facebook you probably already know that I’ve been shooting again with my Holga and going through old Holga negatives. It amazes me how many images I’ve found that for one reason or another I’ve missed or not had the time to play with at the time then forgotten. A Holga is such a wonderful little camera and gives me that feeling of magic that sometimes can be lost when working with a digital camera and Photoshop.

If you know me you know how much I hate the summer season but at lease there’s So You Think You Can Dance to look forward to each year.  Last season was a bit of a disappointment to be honest but with the return of Mia Michaels and a several of past favorites this season should be full of freshness and energy.  Since I was a little kid dance has had a unique draw for me that I have difficulty putting into words.  The ability to have such complete control of one’s body and to use the ability to express creatively is powerful for me to watch in large part because of my physical limitations.  Blah, now I just sound like I’m feeling sorry for myself when in truth I’ve never failed to appreciate how fortunate I am to have such mild CP and for it to only minimally effect my everyday life.

Headshots are here again…

In the past month or so I’ve shot a handful of headshots after taking a bit of a break from shooting that type of work. This has inspired me to share with a few of my favorite shots from the past and soon I hope to be able to share some of my new favorites. It’s such personal and intimate session and work that provides me the opportunity to connect with people on a leave that I may other wise have. To make a session work my subject has to share with and open up to me and vice versa.

More to come soon,

Justin Scalise

Justin Scalise is an actor and is someone that I’ve wanted to get to know better for some time. We bump into each other around town with frequency but there’s never the opportunity to have a conversation of substance. About two weeks ago he took me up on the offer to sit for a portrait. The session gave us the time to have a real conversation while creating some powerful images. I’m hoping to work more with Justin in the future. Love, love, love the eyes!

On a person note, I’ve been thinking a great deal about friendships and the people that I surround myself with past and present. There’s been a fire of sorts that has swept through my life clearing it of those people who longer needed to be there, stripping away those who were toxic and allowed the true and honest relationships to shine bright.

Post-Oedipus

Had a great time shoot some press images for the upcoming production of Post-Oedipus in Austin, Texas at The Blue Theatre by Getalong Gang. It was one of the shoots where I had a rough idea in mind of what I wanted to achieve in terms of look and feel but nothing super mapped out so the process was very organic.  This type of process can be a bit more stressful in the beginning but extremely rewarding and fun by the end of shoot. This shoot marks the first time working with the people at Getalong Gang and the two amazing ladies who have recently taken over management of The Blue Theatre. This project is also the first time working with James Brownlee who is playing Oedipus and I’d love the chance to work with him again.

I hope that you enjoy this new image as much as I am and please don’t be afraid to leave comments.

Getting 2010 started right...

First blog of 2010 and what better way to start than to share than these two new pieces that I've been keeping in hiding as they were a Christmas gift for they're mom. I'm so proud of these images. This bright and contrast look is direction that I'm going to continue exploring this year.

I'm looking forward to 2010 because I feel like for the first time I have a better understanding of where I want to take my work, who I want to work with and they kind of clients I want to seek out. Already I've been talking with several people about projects that have my excited and I think will provide me with material and subject matter to expand my work in areas it hasn't gone before now.

Happy New Year!

From the archive...

Going through my hard drives with the goal of organization and purging duplicate and ever triplicate copies of the same files I'm finding some old work that I think should have a little attention given to them. Travis came by the studio one afternoon a couple years ago to hang and catch up. It wasn't hard to find an excuse for him to play in-front of the camera. Travis if you're read this... when are you coming back to Austin for a visit? Miss you.

Sharing more...

I want to start sharing more of myself and my work but also the fun little photos I've take throughout the day to capture the moment. I don't want to say "The Photo Of The Day" but I'm going to try my best to post a little something everyday. Lets start right now with a photo of Newton, our little (not so little) and very sweet kitten,

Have a great weekend,

Cookies & Lets Hit The Road...

Its been a cookie filled few day for us while photographing the Sweet Baby Collection by Alexandra's Cookie Dreams. If you are a fan of a good cookie and lets be honest, who isn't, you should try some of Alexandra's gourmet treats. YUMMY! I'm personally a big fan of the New York Cowgirl and the Toffee Doodle Dream.

Everyone should pay her a visit: www.alexandrascookiedreams.com

Matt and I are leaving this weekend for a FAST road trip to El Paso, Texas. I've never driven through West Texas so I'm excited to see the landscape and of course to take a photo or two. I'm hoping to get lucky and be able to add some new skies to my collection.

Till next time.... :-)

A return to Kyle…

This has been a rough and emotional week. Matt and I experienced a loss that I don’t even want to put out into the universe by talking about it here in detail. It’s cause a bit of a spacey week, which has left me in need to work on something that would keep my mind focused. I choose to return the shoot I did with Kyle a few weeks back. I’ve already posted one image from that session but these were the two that I was most excited about sharing and working on them has been uplifting. Thank you Kyle!

Dustin Wills at work…

It’s been a crazy week of shooting, friends, and family then wrapped up with a wonderful weekend of time spent with the Matty. One of the shoot that took in the past week was for Tutto Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Mikhail Bulgakov’s “Black Snow” which I’ll be sharing one or two of my favorite shots from that shot in the next week.

At the end of the Black Snow shoot we were able to sneak in a few frames with Dustin Wills, Tutto Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, which is something that I’ve been trying to make happen for months. For anyone who’s had the honor of meeting or even the greater honor of working with Dustin you’ll know that this portrait isn’t a stretch of the imagination in the slightest.

More from Hallie Martin a.k.a. Ruby Joule

I haven’t posted anything new in a bit but better late than never. I’ve been busy shooting and with my Tutto Theatre Company work. This past Sunday we shot the PR shoot for Tutto’s upcoming production “Black Snow” and had a blast. I should have image from that shoot that share in the very near future.

I also have had a first; I photographed my first male nude. Shocky, I know! The funny thing is that I’ve photographed more than couple nudes of pregnant women. I’ll be sharing work from that shoot as well very soon.

I had so much fun shooting Hallie Martin a.k.a Rudy Joule that I wanted to share more from the session. We already have another shoot scheduled for next week and I cannot wait!

A Special Time

I’ve been spending a good amount of time lately going through all my drives trying to archive work and trashing a lot of crap that is just taking up space. Not the most exciting thing to be spend my time doing but in the process I came across this group shot of myself and the rest of the amazing group I took fashion with back in the school days. Miss you all.

Hallie Martin a.k.a. Ruby Joule

Good friend and the multitalented Hallie Martin a.k.a. Ruby Joule of The Jigglewatts (Google them… you’ll be happy that you did) came by yesterday and we had a blast. I’m in LOVE with this portrait! There are a few others shots from the shoot that I planning to share with everyone in the next few of days but I wanted this one to have the stage all to it’s self. Thank you so much Hallie for a fun filled and inspiring afternoon.

Salinas Pueblo Missions

We went to Ruidoso a little over two years ago and while there we chose to take several little day trips rather than spend time skiing. One of these trips took us to the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. It was a cold, windy day and while were there it started to snow. For me, it couldn’t get any better than that. I’ve been working on this image ever since the trip. I’ll spend time on it till I loose a sense of where I’m going with it, put it away and come back to it. I’ve repeated those steps several times now but now I feel I’ve achieved what I had in my head.

Long lost Leah

One of the projects that I’m forcing myself to do is the boring ass job of digging through all my hard drive, burning old work to DVD and getting rid of back ups of back ups of backups. In the middle of that I stumbled across this shot of Leah that was from a lighting test. Love it!
